Scurry County Historical Commission

About the Commission

The Scurry County Historical Commission has worked to preserve local history since its beginning in 1963. Shortly before that time, the State of Texas had begun a program for Recording, Appreciation, Marking, Preserving and Surveying (RAMPS) and local groups were appointed by the county judge of each county to begin work on preserving each county's history.

The Scurry County Commission has been responsible for placing 57 Official Texas Historical Markers in the county. In 1998 the Commission published a 145-page book giving the inscription on each of the markers plus the written narratives required to obtain each marker. These can be ordered from the Commission at 2610 36th Street in Snyder for $6 plus $2 postage. A map of the 21 markers around the square is available at no cost.

The Scurry County Historical Commission has received numerous Distinguished Service Awards from the Texas Historical Commission, the most recent in 1999. Current officers are Elois Pruitt, chairman; B.J. Bartels, Vice Chairman; Aline Parks, secretary-treasurer. Correspondence should be addressed to Mrs. Parks at 2610 36th Street, Snyder, TX 79549.
